We’ve created a place where a black woman can be at the front of the show, but a lot of our success is in how strong of an ensemble it is, and so many people can see themselves in it. We have a lead male who’s Latin. We have two black men. There’s a strong gay character. I look forward to the day when a show like Scandal is a success and it’s not newsworthy. We’re not there yet, but we’ll get there.

Scandal is the first dramatic network television series written and produced by an African-American woman for an African-American woman in the lead role. The show is also only the fourth hour-long primetime drama with a black woman in the lead role.

What they are looking for is a great actress, someone that can bring to life both the pain and the joy Whitney experienced. Does she have to be an African-American actress? Not necessarily.

From Jezebel:

In the ’80s, we had Claire Huxtable and the college gals of Different World, but now catfights and foul language on Basketball Wives, Real Housewives Of Atlanta and Bad Girls Club. Very few of the top non-reality shows on TV — NCIS, Two And A Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, The Mentalist, Rob, Modern Family, Criminal Minds — have a black woman on them. Person Of Interest and Grey’s Anatomy have black women in their ensemble casts, but not as the solo star. Jada Pinkett’s critically panned show HawthoRNe was canceled last fall. Since 1974, there have only been two hour-long dramas with an African-American woman in the starring role, and HawthoRNe was one of them. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency was the other. VH1’s Single Ladies — which is getting a new star, Denise Vasi — is considered a comedy series.

Only one black actress in history has been back [at the Oscars] more than once, and that’s Whoopi Goldberg. But that’s only because there aren’t a lot of roles out there that are going to bring you back. Say if you have two great roles for an African-American actress in a year — one actress can cover it. So if there’s five really good black actresses out there, and that one actress gets it all, then the other four can sit for the next three years.
